Employees with Non-Work Related Injuries, But Requiring Job Modifications
Overview
Employees who have an illness or injury that is not related may still require accommodations to be able to perform their job. The state of CA requires that the employer engage the interactive process and when necessary, provide reasonable accommodations.
Procedures
  1. If it appears that an employee may need modifications to their job due to be able to perform their job due to a non-work related injury or illness, set up a one-on-one meeting to ask them if they have any limitations that may require accommodation.
  2. If they state "yes" then write the limitations down and ask the employee to provide something in writing from their healthcare provider indicating the limitations. Inform them that their limitations will be reviewed immediately to determine reasonable accommodations. Go to #4.
  3. If they state "no" then let them know that if they do experience limitations due to their illness or injury, to contact you immediately. Go to #4.
